End of Financial Year Expense Checklist
Trying to remember a whole year from a blank page does not work. This walks through the categories people most often have work-related records for, so you can check each one against what you actually have. Ticking a box does not make an expense deductible; it only means you have gone and looked.

This checklist is a prompt for your own records. It is not a list of deductions, and nothing here says an expense is claimable. Whether an expense is deductible depends on your work, your circumstances and current ATO rules. A registered tax agent is the person to ask.
What a record needs to show
- The supplier or merchant
- The amount you paid
- What it was for
- The date of the expense
- The work-use share, if it was not entirely for work
Before you lodge
- 1Check that every work expense has a receipt or a record attached, not just an amount.
- 2Check that mixed expenses carry a work-use percentage and a note of how you worked it out.
- 3Check that the year you are looking at runs 1 July to 30 June, not January to December.
- 4Export the financial year as one pack and send it to your agent, or keep it with your own records.
Frequently asked questions
Does ticking a category mean I can claim it?
No. The checklist prompts you to look for records you might have. Whether an expense is deductible depends on your work and circumstances and on current ATO rules.
When does the Australian financial year end?
It runs 1 July to 30 June. Records and totals for a tax return follow that year, not the calendar year.
What if I have no receipt for something?
Record what you do have, note that the receipt is missing, and ask your tax agent how to treat it. Guessing a number with no record behind it is the thing to avoid.
Is my progress saved?
The ticks are stored in your own browser and nowhere else. Clearing your site data or opening the page in another browser starts a fresh list.
Can HeyJerni check this for me?
Record Check in the app reads your financial year and lists the expenses still missing a receipt or a category, which is the same idea applied to real records.
